Record number of drowning deaths in Victoria before summer holidays sparks concern
There have been a record number of drownings on Victoria’s beaches and waterways since July this year — with 27 deaths, including a man who died at Frankston on Saturday and five young children.
Key points:
- Men between the ages of 45 and 64 are one of the at-risk groups being targeted by the safety campaign
- Life Saving Victoria is getting extra funding for more paid lifesavers, helicopters and jet skis to patrol coastal and inland waterways
- The number of drones will be doubled to help Life Saving Victoria better monitor beaches in real time
It is the highest number of drowning deaths seen for the period between July and December, and 11 more than the five and ten-year averages for that period.
