“That includes the elderly and young children, particularly babies and toddlers.”

Rosa Hoff from the Bureau of Meteorology said temperatures could reach up to 10 degrees above average, with cities including Ipswich to experience 40-degree days.

“As we move into the early days of next week we will see severe to extreme heatwave conditions develop over southern Queensland, including regions of the south-east coast,” she said.

“That hot air [will be] sitting over us and not moving off anywhere.

“The coastal parts are less likely to be affected, with sea breezes likely to protect the majority of the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and Brisbane areas. But just as far inland as Ipswich, temperatures should exceed 40 degrees.”
