Postcode lockdowns may be required to tackle new Covid-19 variants even as nationwide restrictions ease.
Under plans being developed in Whitehall, localised shutdowns would be imposed to prevent the emergence and spread of potentially vaccine-resistant strains.
These would be accompanied by surge testing and detailed contact-tracing to try to identify cases of any new strain and eliminate it before it takes hold.
