Police on site as WA Government takes control of Fremantle’s tent city

The West Australian Government has confirmed it has taken control of Fremantle’s Pioneer Park in order to shut down a tent city set up for homeless people.
Key points:
- The tent city has been operating in Pioneer Park since Boxing Day
- On Friday, the WA Government assumed legal responsibility for the park
- Police officers are on site ensuring residents pack up and move on
Authorities have begun packing up the tent city, with representatives from WA Police and the Department of Communities speaking to the 40 homeless people who remain at the park, ahead of a planned attempt to move them to hotels.
