Pokies dominated the last Tasmanian election campaign, but this time around, major parties are barely mentioning them

On a Monday afternoon in Hobart’s northern suburbs, there’s no sign of a state election looming.
Key points:
- The lead-up to Tasmania’s last state election, in 2018, was dominated by discussions about poker machines and the influence of the gaming lobby
- This time around, both parties have kept quiet on the topic and Labor has forged closer ties with the gaming industry
- Political analyst Kate Crowley says there needs to be more transparency around political donations
On the green at the Glenorchy City Bowls Club, there’s plenty of sledging, but no talk of politics.
For 73-year-old Jack Breadon, the May 1 poll is back of mind.
“I do give a vote, but that’s about it,” he said.
“We don’t talk politics when we play bowls.”
