WHAT IS A CIRCULAR ECONOMY?
Luisa Santiago of UK charity Ellen MacArthur Foundation spoke of the urgent need to develop circular economies, particularly in regard to food. Our approach to production is linear – a ‘take-make-waste’ model that drives single-use plastics, landfill and food waste. The circular economy, by contrast, seeks to “decouple economic activity from the consumption of finite resources”. Transition to renewable energy is key, and the movement has three simple principles: design out waste and pollution, keep products and materials in use, and regenerate natural systems.
