White dwarf explosions may be initiated by uranium in the stellar core detonating like a nuclear weapon.
Cosmic A-bomb? A type 1a supernova, SN2014J (inset), in nearby galaxy M82 (main image), as photographed by the Hubble Space Telescope in infrared (red) and visible (orange/blue/green/yellow) light.
