The Hawthorn president did not hold back when asked to respond to the ARL Commission chairman calling the AFL grand final a ‘second-rate’ event.

“The AFL leaves his code for dead right around the country. That is represented not only in the membership, its represented by people who attend the games, and is represented by the TV audiences,” Kennett said.
“I can understand a silver medallist floundering, desperately trying to become a gold medallist. I can only encourage him to keep trying because as long as he continues to make comments that are only designed to score media coverage, you know hes desperate.

“You know hes irrelevant to places like Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, Western Australia, the ACT and the Northern Territory.”
Kennett then disputed a question about V’landys ruffling feathers in Victoria- first in the racing world and then in the battle for football code supremacy.
“Down here, hes irrelevant. We dont even know who he is. There are a few in the sporting game that know his name – through football or racing – but he could walk down the street here in Melbourne and no one would recognise him,” Kennett said.
“I support those who play the game and wish them luck and good health and good income and I congratulate the supporters of the code but Peter is an absolute irrelevance.”
The Hawthorn powerbroker also invited V’landys to spend his hard earned to attend the AFL grand final, if it is held at ANZ Stadium.
“While I congratulate him on delivering the game this year, if we cant stage the grand final down here before crowds in Melbourne, I would be very happy for it to be played in Sydney,” he said.
“And for him to pay the fee to come in the gate to witness what is a truly artful game.”
V’landys had another tongue-in-cheek response for Kennett.
“I apologise to Jeff profusely for getting under his skin,” V’landys said with a laugh. “I highly recommend steroid creams. They’re the best thing for skin inflammation.”
