Papua New Guinea town of outcasts gearing up for David and Goliath battle to save community of Bushwara
Lily Simon can still vividly recall when she was forced to sleep in a tent after being evicted from her home in Port Moresby almost 20 years ago.
Ms Simon had been living in one of the area’s many makeshift settlements, where people regularly face eviction, before she was removed by police.
“[After that] I slept outside without food, the children didn’t go to school,” she says.
“It was hard to live [after being evicted]; where will we cook and eat?
“The rain came down, we built tents and slept outside.”
But Ms Simon wanted to find something better and eventually moved to the outskirts of Port Moresby.
It was a largely empty, bushy area when she started to build a home and a life there, but in the years that followed more people arrived.
