When Stephanie Mahuk paddles her board out to the break, she sings softly under her breath.
She is calling to the ocean deity Leimalo, asking her to send good waves.
Working as a lawyer in Vanuatu’s capital, Port Vila, Ms Mahuk returns to her village on the coast most afternoons, grabs her surfboard and heads to the beach.
“There are no words that can describe what surfing is to me it’s freedom,” she said.
