NSW prisons boss Peter Severin grilled after two Indigenous deaths in custody last week

Two Indigenous Australians died in custody in Sydney last week but the head of Corrective Services has defended the decision not to announce the deaths publicly.

A woman, 44, died in an apparent suicide in Silverwater Women’s Correctional Centre on Friday. She had been serving an eight-month sentence.

A man, 35, died three days earlier in a cell in Long Bay prison’s hospital.

He was being treated for “multiple” health issues but the exact nature of his death wasn’t disclosed.
