Christmas plans have been thrown a curveball with almost every single state and territory moving to keep millions of Australians out.

Sunday proved to be a day of border announcements on Greater Sydney as Victoria, South Australian and Queensland all clamped down.

Just before the clock hit midnight on Saturday, Western Australia and Tasmania did the same.
