To appoint a new chief executive and then pursue a break-up of the company would represent something of a bait and switch.
A decision to demerge would be a big move for Tabcorps new chairman Steven Gregg, who replaced long-time chair Paula Dwyer in January.
But it may not ultimately be Greggs choice. The chorus of major shareholders pushing for the demerger is growing louder.
