New Year’s celebrations turn to tragedy after Queensland man dies in Mary River

Police are investigating if alcohol was a factor in the death of a young man who went swimming in a Queensland river during New Year’s celebrations.
The 20-year-old man’s body was found about 80 metres away from where he was last seen swimming in the Mary River near Gympie just after midnight on Friday.
The Sunshine Coast man was camping at the river with two other young men.
