Older mice have more new mutations in the genomes of their mitochondria than young mice. Researchers compared the DNA sequence of mitochondrial genomes from muscle cells, brain cells, and single female reproductive cells-oocytes (left) using an extremely accurate DNA sequencing technology called duplex sequencing (center) and found that mutations accumulated during the lifetime of the older mice (right).
