New hope a common drug could delay dementia – The Australian Financial Review
There are high hopes that a drug, shown to slow dementia in people with diabetes, will do the same for older people in general.
This is at least double the rate in people without diabetes. It is thought type 2 diabetes increases the dementia risk by promoting degenerative pathways in the brain and nerves.
The study, conducted by the Garvan Institute and the Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing, UNSW Sydney (CHeBA), was published on Thursday in the leading journal Diabetes Care.
