Most COVID-19 victims had a serious pre-existing illness – The Australian Financial Review
About 73 per cent of Australians dying with COVID-19 had at least one other serious pre-existing illness, new ABS data show.
Despite the COVID-19 outbreak, total deaths from all causes across the country have been below historical averages since mid-May, including a steep fall in influenza deaths as people practised social distancing, not going out when sick and better hygiene.
During winter, between the weeks ending June 2 and July 28, there were 24,329 deaths, compared with an average of 26,229 over the past five years.
