In May 2018, Microsoft Research decided to test how well a self-sustaining underwater data center would work by sealing 12 racks of servers in a cylinder and dropping them in the ocean off Scotland’s Orkney Islands. Two years later, the cylinder has been retrieved in order to fully assess how well it worked.
