Melbourne’s population hit 5.16 million before COVID-19 struck – The Age
There were more than 80,000 new Melburnians last year, but the city’s growth rate has been outpaced by Brisbane and Perth.

Melbournes population grew to nearly 5.16 million, an increase of 80,000, in the months before the worst of the citys COVID-19 shutdowns last year, the Australian Bureau of Statistics has confirmed, with the increase driven mostly by overseas migrants.
But despite the healthy 1.6 per cent population increase, Melbourne lost its mantle as Australias fastest growing capital to Brisbane, which grew by 1.9 per cent.
