Astronomers have made the most detailed observations ever of a very young, massive elliptical galaxy estimated to have formed only 500 million years after the big bang. For the first time, an international team led by Paolo Saracco of the Instituto Nazionale di Astrofisica (INAF, Italy) was able to reconstruct the evolutionary history of this massive galaxy when the Universe was only 1.8 billion years old.
