Plans for a major coal mine extension near Wollongong have been rejected by the NSW Independent Planning Commission, which found the project risked irreversible…

The Applicant was aware of concerns raised by WaterNSW and others regarding its mine design and the associated impacts. The Applicant has made minor amendments; however, the impacts remain significant, the commission said.
The commissions statement of reasons said the project had not been properly quantified on the potential for long-term and irreversible impacts on drinking water for Sydney, the Macarthur and Illawarra regions, and the Wollondilly Shire.
It is not in the public interest, it said.
