Killer whales stripping long-life fishers of their of catch in the Southern Ocean
Killer whales are stripping the catch from fishing lines in the Southern Ocean.
Key points:
- Long- line fishers are losing catch to killer whales
- The whales pluck the fish off hooks, like grapes off a bunch
- Whales can stay with vessels for a 1,000 km, just to get a feed
Once an occasional nuisance, the largest member of the dolphin family is now consistently finding, following, and feasting on fish brought in by long-line fishing vessels.
Fisher and restaurateur Will Mure, who has been casting lines in the Southern Ocean since the 1970s, said the whales now associated his boat with a free meal and were common companions on fishing trips.
