Keeping our oceans clean – not just a FAD for the ABF.
This week, Royal Australian Navy personnel from HMAS Ararat, conducting Border Protection operations, detected and recovered a Fish Attracting Device (FAD). These devices inadvertently drift into the Australian Fishing Zone and pose both a biosecurity and maritime pollution risk. Marine life which had colonised the FAD were safely removed and returned to their natural habitat. The FAD was cleaned and quarantined to ensure no contamination in preparation to hand over to the Australian Fisheries Management Authority for safe disposal.
Recovery of these items assists in protecting and preserving Australia’s unique and fragile maritime environment.
