Kate Middleton, 38, has been a working royal since she married Prince William, also 38, in 2011. As her confidence has grown, the Duchess of Cambridge has taken on more engagements by herself. A body language expert suggested why she appears different at public appearances without Prince William.Analysing outings with Prince William before the lockdown, body language expert Judi James suggested Kate is different.
She told Express.co.uk: “In her pre-lockdown poses we can see how Kate’s body language has tended to be restricted to the gesture she was known for – her dazzling, pitch-perfect smile.
“Her gesticulation was less prominent, with bag-carrying or clasped hands being the norm, so she would use raised brows or different degrees of smiling to communicate.”
The expert suggested the Duchess of Cambridge would show similar body language to her husband in the past.
Judi continued: “She was also often part of a body language double-act with William and this seems to have led to a very loyal trait of subtly mimicking many of his body language rituals, like the fig-leaf hand clasp, that were often a symptom of some deep-rooted social shyness from her husband.
“Being too articulate with her gestures might have upstaged him when they were both clearly keen to show a mirrored, like-minded front.”
During the coronavirus lockdown, Kate started to make virtual appearances by herself and with other royals.
When appearing on video calls by herself, Judi claimed the mother-of-three was more relaxed.
“Working alone recently,” Judi said, “we can see Kate wearing the clothes she always looks happiest in, with her tight jeans and casual, flat-heeled shoes, using some very powerful body language techniques to bridge that two-metre gap.
“Her body lean and her open-splayed arms are both intentional gestures that register a desire to create warmth and more friendly, intimate conversations but without breaking the rules.
“These intentional gestures are vital for us all to keep the affection going currently, and Kate’s open arms form an empty embrace gesture that would create a response of happiness from her audience.”
How did Kate Middleton become a royal?
Early life
Kate Middleton, or Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, was born on 9 January 1982 at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading, England.
She was born to Michael and Carole Middleton, a former flight dispatcher and air hostess. The couple founded a party supplies company, Party Pieces, in 1987 – now estimated to be worth £30 million.
Kate has a younger sister Pippa Matthews, 34, and a younger brother James Middleton, 31.
Education
Kate and her family moved to Amman, Jordan, in 1984, where the future Duchess was educated at an English-speaking nursery school.
After moving back to Berkshire the family sent Kate to private school, St Andrews School. She went on to briefly study at Downe House before moving onto Marlborough College where she boarded.
For university the young Kate attended the University of St Andrews in Fife, Scotland. Here she was awarded an undergraduate MA (2:1 Hons) in history of art.
Relationship with Prince William
Kate met Prince William when they were both studying at St Andrews, and both living in St Salvator’s Hall. Famously, William reportedly took a fancy to Kate after she wore a see-through dress during a fashion show.
In 2003 the couple began dating and lived together during their second year of university.
The couple split in April 2007, however, in October they were back together.
Wedding
Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton with his late mother Princess Diana’s engagement ring in October 2010. The couple were holidaying in Kenya at the time.
On 29 April 2011 they married at Westminster Abbey with a whopping 26 million watching the event live.
Kate wore an Alexander McQueen dress worth a reported £250,000 on the big day.
Kate assumed the title “Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge” and also became the Duchess of Cambridge on the day.
