Joe Biden has the certified votes to become president. What happens next?

California has certified its presidential election results, appointing 55 electors who pledge to vote for Democratic candidate Joe Biden.
That means he officially has the electoral college majority needed to take the White House.
Americans do not vote directly via popular ballot for their president. The president is rather chosen via the electoral college system.
