Jawoyn traditional owners build job opportunities for Katherine’s Indigenous people

Gregory Maroney has an enviable commute — a boat trip up the Northern Territory’s spectacular Nitmiluk Gorge followed by a walk along the national park’s new mountain bike trails.
Key points:
- The traditional owners of Nitmiluk National Park have created a social enterprise to help secure work for Indigenous people
- Jawoyn Contracting employs local Aboriginal people and competes for contracts in the construction industry
- One of the projects is helping to construct new mountain bike trails in the national park
He’s a labourer working on the new bike trails as part of the multimillion-dollar upgrade of Nitmiluk National Park near Katherine.
“I feel really good working up here. I feel proud,” said Mr Maroney, from Rockhole community.
