Israel Folau could return to NRL as St George Illawarra Dragons ask league for permission to sign ex-Wallaby

Controversial football star Israel Folau could be back playing NRL this year after St George Illawarra has revealed it is pursuing the 31-year-old.

- Israel Folau was sacked by Rugby Australia in 2019 over homophobic social media posts
- He played four NRL seasons with Melbourne and Brisbane, also representing Queensland and Australia
- Current and former Australian Rugby League Commission bosses have said Folau’s comments are incompatible with the league
The Dragons confirmed they have contacted the NRL to have Folau join the club this year.
The NRL will now consider the Dragons’ application to bring him back.
“There is a process of consideration underway involving numerous stakeholders, including the NRL,” a Dragons spokesman said.
