The 40 per cent target has the support of Chief Executive Women, the Australian Council of Superannuation Investors, the 30 per cent Club and the Workplace Gender Equality Agency.
Questions have been raised about the effectiveness of some of these bodies given that boards have ignored them.
For example, Westpac’s former chairman Lindsay Maxsted was a member of the 30 per cent club and yet diversity on its board of directors is about 20 per cent.
