Investigation concludes Joe the pigeon had a US leg band and won’t be executed, says Australian Government
A pigeon initially declared a biosecurity risk after flying to Australia from the United States will not be executed following an investigation by the Department of Agriculture.
Key points:
- Federal authorities had said the bird posed a biosecurity risk and planned to kill it
- But following the discovery the band was fake, authorities said other options, such as re-export, were being considered
- The bird may have travelled to Australia on a cargo ship
It comes after an American bird organisation declared its identifying leg band was a fake.
The band suggested the bird, found in a Melbourne backyard on December 26, was a racing pigeon that had left the US state of Oregon, 3,000 kilometres away, two months earlier.
