The Australian Energy Market Operator, which runs the National Electricity Market and makes sure there is enough power generated to match demand as well as ensure system stability, quickly moved to fill the 3000-megawatt shortfall created by the failure of Queenslands second-largest coal-fired power station.
Other state-owned generators, including the Wivenhoe pumped hydro and gas plants, helped plug the gap, as spot electricity prices soared.
