If Peter Gutwein’s Liberals win the Tasmanian election, it would be the first time the Liberals have won three elections in a row

In calling a snap state election for May 1, Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein is hoping to capitalise on the high approval ratings he has through his handling of the state’s COVID-19 response.

He will be looking for the same COVID bounce seen in the re-election of two state and two territory governments in the past year.

Last October, Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk was re-elected with an increased majority despite criticism from the federal and NSW governments for closing of the state’s borders as a COVID measure.
