I was assaulted after Mardi Gras — and I wasn’t the only one

I woke up feeling sad yesterday.
I tried to be brave. I tried to ignore it. But I couldn’t.
It all started on Saturday night, when one of my biggest fears became a reality.
I was assaulted for being gay.
Like thousands of others in Sydney, I was out celebrating Mardi Gras.
For those of you who haven’t experienced it — the energy and love that surges through the Harbour City is something truly unique.
I started the night surrounded by my “rainbow family” and ended it at an afterparty near Oxford Street — Sydney’s gay strip.
As I left with three others, a red car screeched to a halt next to us.
A group of men got out. We were ambushed.
