Scientists believe that the asteroid 16 Psyche is the core of a protoplanet that was shattered a few billion years ago. With a composition of 90 percent metal and 10 percent silicate rock, it is believed to be much denser than a rocky object of similar size, which contains approximately 1 percent of the total mass of the asteroid belt. According to the US space agency NASA, the asteroid was named after the nymph Psyche, who Cupid married but was killed by Venus….
