How Penrith’s four-try rookie almost left his local pub running dry – Fox Sports

It was the afternoon that Panthers debutant Charlie Staines will never forget and a local pub came to regret.

While the 19-year old rookie kept scoring, his local pub back home kept pouring.
A 20-person strong group of family and friends made the five-hour trip from Forbes to watch Staines run out for his first-grade debut in the 56-24 thrashing of Cronulla.
It seemed like there was no better place to be as Staines ran in four tries, his mates in the corner cheering him on with every race towards the line.

But over 400 kilometres away at the Post Office Hotel in Forbes, patrons would also be telling you there was no place they would rather be.
In light of Staines debut, the pub decided to celebrate by offering up a free beer to everyone in the room each time he scored a try.
The Sydney Morning Heraldreports that 50 locals had come to the bar to tune in and all jumped at the chance for a free drink when Staines sliced over for his first NRL try in the 23rd minute.

Shortly into the second half, another 50 beers were being passed around.
Then within the space of five minutes near the close of the game, Staines went over again – twice.
And so, the pub took to social media to advertise: Pub for sale… $1. BYO BEER.

We had about 50 people and it got busier and busier as the afternoon went on, the Post Office Hotels manager Matt Coleman told the Herald.
We didnt advertise anything and we werent sure if Cronulla knew he would be playing.
But it was loud. I think everyones second team now is Penrith. Hes a very popular kid, very quiet and unassuming. Hes such a respectful bloke.
