How is Clive Palmer maintaining his political influence at the Queensland election?

How can a political party with no seats — and little prospect of winning any — carry so much political weight?

The answer is: by having lots of money.

Clive Palmer’s United Australia Party (CPUAP) made history last year by spending an unprecedented $60-70 million on the federal election.

Although the party attracted a paltry 3.4 per cent of the primary vote, its anti-Labor advertising is widely credited for helping Prime Minister Scott Morrison stay in office.

In this year’s Queensland election, the Gold Coast businessman has made some important tweaks to his 2019 strategy.
