How ‘free’ is free speech?

Two of my summer reading books had me thinking afresh about free speech. The first one was The Happiest Man on Earth by Eddie Jaku. He grew up in Germany and worked hard to be a good citizen. His family and friends also worked hard and each appreciated the other.
