“The halo is a protective device that looks a bit like a chicken wishbone,” said Andrew Westacott, chief executive of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation.
“It sits immediately over the cockpit and it is made of carbon fibre. It is immensely strong and it was introduced on the cars following a fatal accident with Jules Bianchi.”
Bianchi, a French Formula 1 driver, sustained massive head trauma on a rain-soaked track at Suzuka, Japan, in 2014 when his car crashed head-on into a trackside crane.
