How an NRL debutant’s four tries almost left a pub with no beer – Sydney Morning Herald
A hotel in Charlie Staines’ home town thought it would be a good idea to offer a free schooner to every patron if he scored a try. The problem was he didn’t stop at one.
Shortly after Staines’ last try in Penrith’s 56-24 demolition of the Sharks, the pub posted a message on Facebook: “Pub for sale … $1. BYO BEER”.
“We had about 50 people and it got busier and busier as the afternoon went on,” said the Post Office Hotel’s manager Matt Coleman, admitting the premises was still capped in numbers due to the COVID-19 crisis.
“We didn’t advertise anything and we weren’t sure if Cronulla knew he would be playing.
“But it was loud. I think everyone’s second team now is Penrith. He’s a very popular kid, very quiet and unassuming. He’s such a respectful bloke.
