It’s impossible to overestimate how inspiring it is to witness the world’s best competing first-hand in any sport.
Many remember seeing a young, ginger-headed kid from Dee Why by the name of Shane Herring defeat Kelly Slater in the final of the 1992 Coke Classic. Kelly went on to win his first world title that year and 10 more after that. Shane burnt out, but no surfer ever forgets who won at Narrabeen in 1992.
