Hong Kong citizens apply for visa to live and work in UK to escape Beijing national security law

A new visa system that offers Hong Kong residents an opportunity to become British citizens has begun, seven months after Beijing’s imposition of a national security law.
Key points:
- The visa allows some Hong Kong citizens to live and work in the UK
- Britain says it is fulfilling a historic and moral commitment to its former territory
- More than 300,000 Hong Kongers are expected to take up the offer in the next five years
The scheme, which was first announced last year, allows those with British National Overseas (BNO) status to live, study and work in Britain for five years before eventually applying for citizenship.
It comes as China and Hong Kong say they will no longer recognise the BNO passport as a valid travel document.
