If round one of AFLW season 2021 will be remembered for a series of iconic images such as Nathan and Alice Burke’s embrace one stands out for its poignancy.
As the Giants stood arm-in-arm opposite the Dockers at Fremantle Oval, the camera paused for an uncomfortably long time on ruck Erin McKinnon.
McKinnon, who at 189 centimetres towered above her teammates, stood with tears streaming down her face as tribute was paid to teammate Jacinda Barclay, who took her own life in October 2020.
