Golden Globes 2021 as it happened: The Crown and Schitt’s Creek win TV awards, Borat and Nomadland win film categories
More on Chloe Zhao’s best director win
As Dannielle mentioned, Zhao’s best director win makes her only the second woman to take home a Globe for this category. The first was Barbara Streisand for YENTL in the ’80s. Yep, it’s really been that long.
It’s not just a Globes thing either. The Oscars are notorious for overlooking female directors.
This year was actually the first in Globes history where women made up the majority of the nominations (3:2).
It’s a stark contrast with the Oscars, which nominated zero female directors in 2020, despite several eligible films with female directors that year (The Farewell, Hustlers, etc).
The Oscars have been criticised for its pretty bad track record with nominating female directors, so maybe it will…
