An emergency alert has been issued for parts of the Gold Coast as severe thunderstorms bring intense rainfall and flash flooding to much of south-east Queensland.

The Gold Coast City Council is telling residents in Currumbin, Mudgeeraba and Tallebudgera to monitor the situation and consider moving to higher ground as heavy rainfall is likely to impact low-lying properties in the coming hours.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) issued a severe thunderstorm warning for several council areas earlier today, with Hotham Creek, south of Beenleigh, recording 113 millimetres in one hour.
