Genshin Impact is an in-development game that caused an angry PS4 fan to smash their console because of its overt similarities to Zeldas Breath Of The Wild. However, from having been able to participate in the games final closed beta for PS4, were happy to report that its more than just the Zelda clone which infuriates some people. The final closed beta is unfortunately marred by a few performance issues, but away from technical problems theres lots of great characters and really enjoyable gameplay.
Without a release date for both PS4 and Nintendo Switch, Genshin Impact is a Chinese RPG by miHoYo. Although some people dismiss it as just a Zelda clone, there has been a lot of anticipation surrounding the title thanks to hype from the likes of Shuhei Yoshida.
In its current state its far from perfect as there are instances in which its frame rate hideously plummets, but its gameplay and characters could make it a huge hit provided the technical woes are fixed.
Genshin Impact PS4 beta frame rate issues
The biggest issue with the final closed beta for Genshin Impact on PS4 has been its frame rate.
Prior to a recent patch, just sprinting around the games open world could cause the frame rate to plummet to a snails pace. Genshin Impact does note that the PS4 closed beta isnt the final product, but its performance issues are still worth mentioning.
MiHoYo have released a patch and this has largely fixed the performance issues during combat and when exploring the landscape. But, when entering the games town, the problems with its frame rate still exist.
The game begins to lag, NPCs disappear and then slowly come into existence, and there are occasional freezes.
Aside from the aforementioned problems with its performance, there are also lots of loading screens that take more than a few seconds to pass. And even when the loading screen finishes you can be left staring at a black screen for awhile longer.
Lastly, this only happened once, but the game broke when exploring the final dungeon/temple of a quest. To progress we needed to defeat all the enemies in a room to open this colossal door, but the door wouldnt budge and we needed to start the temple again.

Genshin Impact open world
Genshin Impact has a beautiful open world for you to explore and this is where the similarities with Breath Of The Wild largely stem from.
When exploring the open world of Genshin Impact, you constantly need to manage your stamina when sprinting, climbing, and swimming.
MiHoYos vast landscape is stunningly beautiful as well as fun to explore, and theres plenty of optional tasks for you to complete and get distracted by.
Regardless of whether youre sprinting, climbing, or swimming towards an objective, you will always find a chest to open. These chests are often opened by defeating enemies and this is perfectly fine seeing as the combat is so enjoyable.
Aside from opening chests, there are also Statues for you to visit to fill in parts of the map as well as to increase stats such as stamina.
You will want to visit these statues to fill in your map, and you will also want to open chests to get items such as artefacts which can be added to characters to increase their HP or attack. For those who have OCD, you will also constantly be picking up flowers, fruits, meat, and other items littered across the landscape because its just so addictive.
While Teyvat is an enjoyable playground, the only real drawback is that it can be eerily quiet. The background music is often really low and hard to hear, and a lot of times it just disappears completely. This makes adventures noticeably quiet when all you can hear is your character running through grass.

Genshin Impact characters and gameplay
The best part about the Genshin Impact final closed beta is its characters and gameplay.
While the open-world is fun, beautiful, and full of activities, Genshin Impacts characters and gameplay make the experience better than just good.
At the beginning of the game, you have to choose a protagonist between twins. We chose the female variant because of a more interesting design, but the story should largely remain the same regardless.
Aside from the twins whom you get to name, the first character you come across in Genshin Impact is Paimon. She acts as your navigator and introduction to the world of Teyvat, but the characters become far more interesting afterwards.
Amber is a spunky knight who pretty much becomes your BFF, Kaeya is a solemn dude with an eye patch, meanwhile Lisa is a flirtatious witch.
All three of them are enjoyable as are other characters you come in contact with, but what makes them even better is that you get to control them in combat as well as during exploration.
By holding L1 and pressing either triangle, circle, or X, you can switch from your chosen twin to either Amber, Kaeya, or Lisa. And each of them feel and control differently.
Amber uses a bow and arrow, Kaeya is flashy with a sword, and Lisa is an OP witch with powers of electricity. They each have their own unique weapons and skillsets such as Amber who can unleash a teddy bear version of herself to explode and sets enemies on fire.

Theres plenty of variety when it comes to enemies as well, and this makes each character of your party feel important as the colour of foes indicates which combatant would be best to use.
The only drawback to Amber, Kaeya, and Lisa is that they make your chosen twin feel useless. We quickly stopped playing as the twin because of her characterisation and combat being less interesting, and this resulted in an even more jarring experience as NPCs treated characters they should know as complete strangers.
It is noticeably weird to see a fellow knight refer to Amber as a stranger, but it doesnt detract from the enjoyment of playing as other party members.
In the end, if Genshin Impact launches without the performance issues that have plagued its PS4 beta, then theres a very good free-to-play RPG (with monetisations) for Sony gamers to eventually experience. Its open-world, characters, and gameplay are all enjoyable, but technical issues must be resolved.
Thanks miHoYo for the beta code.
