In his very first Grand Tour, 22-year-old Swiss rider Marc Hirschi (Sunweb) has been one of the stand-out performers at this year’s Tour de France. The former U23 world champion took a brilliant second place on stage 2, beaten only by Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-QuickStep) in a three-up sprint. And then on Sunday’s stage 9 he was even more impressive again.
Hirschi went clear on his own with more than 80 km still to race, and held off the GC favourites as they chased him through the Pyrenees…
