A tearful Gael Monfils has described his horror form slump as a “nightmare” after being knocked out in the first round of the Australian Open on Monday.

Monfils loss to Finnish youngster Emil Ruusuvuori marked his sixth straight defeat on tour (seventh when including his loss at the ATP Cup), with his last win coming in February 2020 against compatriot Richard Gasquet.
Speaking to French media after the five-set loss, an emotional Monfils was at a loss to pinpoint why his game has taken such a dive since starting last season 16-3 before the tour was suspended due to COVID-19.
