Fruit and vegetable prices set to skyrocket in Australia due to labour shortage – 7NEWS.com.au
Seasonal veggies, stone fruit and grapes are facing the biggest hikes up to 25 per cent.
Coronavirus is affecting food prices with fears of a 25 per cent hike in fresh fruit and vegetables over summer.
The problem is travel restrictions cutting off seasonal harvest crews with the NSW industry alone short some 90,000 workers.
We usually use backpackers. And we have not had one person, Orange farmer Guy Gaeta told 7NEWS.
Gaeta has been farming cherries for 35 years and has been forced to call in contractors.
It doesnt just cost producers more, consumers will also pay for the shortage.
