Formerly known as One Tree Hill, the Indigenous People had two names for Mt Coot-tha, “Gootcha” meaning honey and “Mappee” the closest English translation being “backside” as it formed the rear end of the range. Mr Radford, who was Assistant Clerk of Parliament at the time, went to King Sandy and asked what the natives called One Tree Hill. Being told the two names and their meanings, he wisely chose Gootcha which was eventually spelt Coot-tha.
