Forecasters warn ‘much wetter’ summer could bring rain to rival 2010-11 floods

“Speaking specifically about Queensland, we typically see four tropical cyclones forming in the Coral Sea, with one to two of them crossing the coast,” she said.
“So if we are going to see an above-average season, we are likely to see more than that affecting Queensland this year.”
Ms Boekel said localised wind directions, trough systems and other short-term factors influenced whether a tropical cyclone would cross the coast after forming in the Coral Sea.
She said the 2020-21 La Nina weather cycle was “not quite as strong” as 2010-11.
“I think most Queenslanders will remember a decade ago when we had a quite serious La Nina that brought a lot of flooding and bought Cyclone Yasi as well,” Ms Boekel said.
