“Fast 9” May Go To Space After All? – Dark Horizons

The long-running joke about any action franchise is that it as the sequels keep racking up and it grows more and more outlandish in scale, it will inevitably go into space at some point.
James Bond did it with “Moonraker,” while horror icons Jason Voorhees and Pinhead have also made their way off-planet. More recently the joke has been made that both the “Fast and Furious” and “Mission: Impossible” franchises will do it – the latter kind of will with M:I star Tom Cruise set to film an unrelated action film at least partly shot in real outer space.
“Fast and Furious” though, a film series that started off about street racing but which has long since left the laws of physics behind, hasn’t shown any hint of doing something like that. Until today.
Ludacris, who has starred in six of the films including the upcoming ninth installment, has hinted that the new film may in fact go into space. Appearing on an interview with SiriusXM’s Jess Cagle and Julia Cunningham, the hosts offered ideas on how the blockbuster series could keep topping itself.
When Cunningham mentioned space, Ludacris hinted that her idea wasn’t that far off: “I will say that you are very intuitive, because you said something right, but I’m not going to give it away.” Cunningham reportedly tried to get Ludacris to elaborate, but the rapper and actor coyly responded: “I don’t know. I don’t know what you said.”
The franchise’s screenwriter Chris Morgan has previously suggested the possibility saying last year: “I will say – what’s the best way to answer this? – you’ll have to wait and see. Listen, as long as the stakes were set up correctly, then I’m down for whatever.”
Ludacris also says he’s fine with the delay as it allows those working on the projects more time to get things right:
“That just gives the editors a little more time to perfect it even more. So, now I can only imagine what’s going to happen. Hypothetically, if there is a Fast 10 and 11, and you understand the time the creatives, the people who are writing these scripts right now have to make these the best possible sequels of all time – I can’t even imagine. That is what I am thinking.”
“F9: The Fast Saga” is currently targeting an April 2021 release date.
